The Regional Agrifood Research and Development Service (SERIDA) is a non-profit institution located in Northern Spain depending on the Government of Asturias. The main aims are, to diversify and increase local agri-food production and contribute to their modernization and improvement through research and technological development. SERIDA focuses its efforts on farming, livestock, forestry, and food.
In the field of plant production, SERIDA has extensive experience in the preservation and characterization of plant genetic resources, plant genetics, plant breeding, plant protection against pests and diseases, food quality and composition, and the implementation of sustainable farming methods.

Role in the Legume Generation project

The SERIDA partner, through the Plant Genetic Group team, will contribute to boosting the breeding of peas, boosting the breeding of Phaseolus beans, and training actions.
SERIDA will provide seeds of selected lines, segregating populations, and accessions that are being maintained in its collection. SERIDA will develop multiplications and phenotyping of plant genetics resources in controlled conditions of beans and peas, field trials in organic farming systems to characterize the response of bean and pea diversity, tests in controlled conditions to investigate the response against pathogens in Phaseolus beans, sets of new lines derived from interspecific crosses in Phaseolus beans, identification of new genes and molecular markers to bean breeding, a breeding program to pyramiding resistance genes in a bean genotype, and genetic and agronomic analysis. All these works will provide tools to accelerate plant breeding programs for specific needs in Europe of these crops. Finally, SERIDA will collaborate in the task of dissemination, exploitation and communication
